Is caused by a cross between a bacterium and virus called a phytoplasma (a tiny organism) that can cause plant damage and death. Flower hosts of aster yellows affects more than two hundred species in over 40 plant families.
Aster yellows virus is a disease carried from an infected plant to a healthy one by the insect aster leaf-hopper. Often aster leaf-hoppers are mistaken to be gnats because to many they look similar. They have semi-transparent wings and are brown or greenish in color. Easily disturbed, these insects of aster yellows virus often go unnoticed until it is too late.
