It varies in color from golden brown to green, generally has 4 black spots on the wing covers, and always has a black triangle on the area of its back just after its head. Larvae will develop below ground and can be found feeding on the lower beans on the soil. Feeding injury by the larva may be found on the roots, but such injury does not usually kill the bean plants. The adults will feed on both the foliage and the bean pods usually near the top of the plants. Insect bean plant foliage damage is most noticeable when the leaves turn dry and discolor in late August or early September, pod feeding may intensify as the pods become more succulent than the foliage.
