Blue lettuce is a tall perennial herb that is common to prairielands. The weed grows 1-3 feet tall with showy ½ inch sky-blue flowers and milky sap. Its spear-shaped leaves are alternate on the stem. Upper leaves are entire while leaves on the bottom are usually prominently toothed. Creeping roots form large colonies. Flowers bloom from June through September. The fruit is one-seeded pod with a black or brown seed. The plant reproduces by seed.
