Sporobolus indicus (Smutgrass) is a perennial weed native to tropical america. It occurs as a serious weed problem in southern and western portions of the US. The weed is named after the dark colored fungus that grows at the end of the leaves and seed heads. Slow to start but thrives in drier climates. It is difficult to mow as it is quite stiff and is also known as "wiregrass."
