Bacterial Soft Rot

Call your local cooperative extension

Soft rot disease is most easily recognized on vegetables by soft, wet, cream to tannish/brown colored outside/skin surrounded by a dark brown to black ring. When conditions are right, these spots will be seen first on the outside/skin of infected vegetables and then the disease will work inward. At the start of the disease, there is no odor, but as the soft rot disease progresses and secondary infections take hold the vegetables blackened and emit a bad smell.
