Aspen Roots

The roots of newly planted Aspen trees need time to become established and grow before they can absorb sufficient water for the tree. Planting trees in hot weather adds to the challenge. Check to see if the soil is getting wet several inches deep when the trees are watered. Water the trees so that the soil is soaked, then allow it to dry out until it is just slightly moist before watering again. Be sure to water the trees once or twice a month this winter when there is no snow on the ground. Aspen trees have extensive root system that can grow up to 40 feet away from the mother/parent tree. The Aspen's roots seek out water sources and in the process can tear up sidewalks and infiltrate sewers and septic systems.
